UPS or Battery?

I'm working on a watchdog type system that will be keeping tack of a
number of things at a remote location. One of the things we watch for
is power outage. It's no problem to check to see if the power is on,
but the BSII needs to keep running when it is out so it can call my
pager.

My first thought was a small computer UPS, even a small one should
keep a Stamp running for a long long time. This though seems like
over kill, I really only need an hour or so of run time after the
power is out. Is there a simple way to trickle charge a small 6 to 9
volt battery and use it for powering the Stamp at the same time? In a
sense a very small homemade UPS.

Thanks
Mike

Look at a company called Altronix www.altronix.com
They make a lot of neat little modules for the security industry.
Look at the small burgular alarm power supply boards. They provide float
charging of backup battery and alarm condition of primary power failure.

    Cheers,
    Phil

You could use a 12v motorcycle battery and a maintenance charger.

The following circuit from Practical ELECTRONICS magazine.
    D1&R1 provide the charging current.
D1 prevent the battery from discharing backwards following
    the maine failure.
T1,D3,R2&R3 to produce low voltage cut-off to prevent deep
    discharge of B1.
