Motor control chips - TPIC0107b and A3953SB

Hello,

I'm trying to create a PWM motor control system for 2 motors
utilizing either the TPIC0107B chips from Texas Instruments, or the
A3953SB chips from Allegro. The TI chips seems simple enough to
use, just direction and PWM. The problem is that they are surface
mount SOIC package, and I don't know how to use them in any way with
a breadboard/protboard (and a custom PCB is out of the question due
to costs). The 3953's are DIP, but I can't figure out what to do
because there are so many pins needed to control it (brake, mode
phase, enable, rc, sense, etc.) I have several shift registers
availible if I need them for the 3953's. If I could get any help
controlling my motors, I would greatly appreciate it. I'd really
like to use the Texas Instrument chips because they're rated at 5
amps instead of 1.3 amps, but they're so small!
