I came across a couple of internet sites that could be of
interest here - to interface stuff with Basic Stamp.
The rubbery ruler design is of a variable capacitor made of
spring conductors - they claim .1% accuracy over 250% stretch.
Could be part of a position or force transducer.

For 555 aficionados.... and lots of basic electronics on root pages...
"555 Timer?"

Or combine a rubbery ruler with a 555 and get a timed output
pulse which responds to position or force...
Have fun...
