I think we blew it up... what do you think?

A friend and I are working on a project for school using a BS2sx...
we mistakenly plugged +12v into P8 (pin 13) thinking it was VIN
(pin 24).
This was our first time hooking the stamp up, so we have no idea if
it previously worked (or if our other connections are correct). But
now when I attempt to download a program to the stamp or use
the "Identity" command in the BASIC Stamp for Windows program I get a
message telling me that the stamp is detected but not responding, and
to check my power supply.
this is a 24-pin DIP model on a breadboard. I made my own
programming cable using twisted pair. Right now I have the 4
programming wires from the serial port, VIN (connected to a 12V
battery that is fully charged and working) and VSS connected to the
battery's ground. Am I missing anything (yes I do have the jumper
wire on the serial port, and I followed the numbering scheme printed
on the DB9 connector to figure out where to put my wires, so
everything should be in the right order)
Basically I'm trying to figure out if I should keep working with the
stamp because it might be ok, or if the +12 has definately fried it,
in which case we'll need to have another one ordered.

This message does not necessarily mean your stamp is totally damaged.
Port P8 may however be. Check your editor settings under edit ->
preferences.
The tab 'editor operation' has settings that should reflect your stamp
(BS2SX)
and used com port.
Greetings peter

As the editor's setting are correct I strongly advice to take a closer look
at your
programming cable which you made yourself. Be absolutely sure you
have the following connections:
Use a multimeter (ohm range) to check for any shorts or broken wires.
PC DB9 female connector front view
5 4 3 2 1
O o o o o
O o o o
9 8 7 6
RX DB9 pin 2 to stamp pin 1 TX
TX DB9 pin 3 to stamp pin 2 RX
DTR DB9 pin 4 to stamp pin 3 ATN this line is pulsed low prior to
programming
GND DB9 pin 5 to stamp pin 4 GND
DB9 pin 6 to DB9 pin 7 for automatic detection (optional)
Hope this helps, if not already checked.
Greetings peter

both of the settings are correct (it is set for BS2sx, and I'm using
COM2 which it is set for, I've also tried AUTO and COM1 just in case)

Your use of Yahoo! Groups is subject to http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/
identify the processor. ie '{$STAMP BS2} For a BS2 chip.
This will tell the editor which Stamp to look for in the event your editor
settings are different. If you do different Stamps, you can also specify
separate directories for each model so the code is stored in a different
place for each type of Stamp.
Be sure to tug on the wires going to the DB9 -- the cheapy ones Radio Shack
sells with the crimp-on pins and sockets are bad about no retaining the
connector. Looks good until you plug it in, then it pushes the pin or socket
back.
