40kHz Crystal for Sonar

I want to build the Sonar project in Scott Edward's book. It calls for a
40kHz Quartz Crystal, and he suggests Digi-Key SE3316-ND.

Does anyone know of another place to buy one? I don't have need for
anything else from Digi-Key ( i.e. $5 shipping for $1.23 item ).

Jameco does not have the 40kHz Microprocessor Crystal, but it does have TTL
Crystal Clock Oscillators ( part 153226 ). Can I use
this instead ? Jameco also has the transducers, so it would be nice if I
could buy every thing from there.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Bryan Smith

Where are you seeing them in the Radio Shack catalog ? On page 264 of the
2001 catalog they have Microprocessor crystals but nothing at 40kHz.

    Hi Bryan,

Check the Radio Shack commercial catalog (or Radioshack.com). You
may be able to have them delivered to the store for free or a
    discounted price.

    * Add a RTC, 256k EEPROM and an I2C bus to your BS2

I've seen where I can create a circuit using a 555 oscillator. Will the
performance of my Sonar circuit be degraded if I choose to not use the
crystal and use the 555 instead ?

    bryan,
i have built that very circuit for a science fair
project. i used the triple nickle to generate the
frequency for the sonar (use the 40khz sensors which
do not need too much power to stimulate a signal)
it is very helpful to use an oscilloscope
to tune the circuit, ie to determine the
    resistor/capacitor values which determine the
frequency of the triple nickel timer.
if you try to absolutely copy scott's circuit it
probably will not work for you. the circuit does work,
but you have to play with the resistor/cap values, and
    therefore the o-scope helps.
the sonar works great when you get the freq right.
i also found that using a transmitter/receiver pair
which you can buy "matched" helps.
