Crystals/Resonators

I'm familiar with the resonator plugged into the side of my Stamp,
and I've seen how they can be plugged into a couple of inverters to
emit a usable clock pulse...
But can they be used free-standing, without the inverters, to provide
clocking to another component? I'd like to avoid another chip on my
board if not necessary. In this case, I'm clocking a serial in-to-pwm
out chip...

Yes. I routinely use a single Epson resonator to clock multiple components,
such as 2 or 3 PICS.

Hmmm, yep, but don't the PICS have a pair of pins intended for
    connecting the resonator?
If I take a free-standing resonator, 5v on one side, and ground the
middle, I don't get anything out the third pin. Are the inverters a
    necessary part of this equation?

Actually, I'm using Epson CMOS/TTL oscillators, not resonators, to clock the
PICS. On 16 series PICS, I just connect the oscillator output to PIC pin 16
(OSC1/CLKIN), with both the PIC and oscillator GND pins on the same ground
plane. So the oscillator can be used with multiple PICS up to the CMOS
    fanout current limit.
