Speed controllers - HELP!!!!!

I've been working on a basic stamp robot. The robot has become very
sturdy /*Heavy*/. I can no longer use servos for locomotion. I head
that some people use rc speed controllers to drive power window
motors. Can anyone recommend an electronic speed controller that
would be compatible with a 12volt power window motor and a basic
stamp.
Do most RC speed controllers keep the power they are regulating
separate from the power/*Signal sent from the stamp as pulsouts*/
that is sent to speed control. I don't know much about speed
controllers, so I'm afraid I might get one that will get is power
from the basic stamp power supply, which is just a 9 volt battery.
That wouldn't be enough to power a 12 volt motor.

In R/C the rx'ver controls( either via servo or direct from rx ) the
speed control and it runs on its own power source (4.8v - 6v). For
one reason, I fly heli's and planes if you lose engine power you can
still SOMEWHAT control vehicle. Also the motor's draw alot of current
and run usually from 7.6v to 12v. Do a search on towerhobbies.com for
speed control. They give a little description.

All R/C speed controllers takes a control signal that is the same as for
a Servo. Some electronic speed controllers ("ESC" is how the R/C people
call it) have a opto-isolator in the input then may be needed a buffer
source-follower (transistor) to drive correctly the ESC. There are ESCs
with only FORWARD (for planes) and ESC with REVERSE (for cars and
    boats). There are many brands like: Astroflight;Airtronics; Tekin;
Vantec; Futaba; Novak; Duratrax etc. Some brands have Brake (short
circuit motor terminals when in neutral position) and others have
battery cutoff bellow some voltage level. They generally are rated for
number of cells and a peak current (not sustained current).Battery
current supply for MOTORS generally are inputed in separated lead
terminals and not comes from R/C connector.

Why not use r/c motors and gear boxes? I worked on one of those dump
trucks a child rides in and they used 540 size motors thru a belt and gear
    system on each wheel.
Some controllers have a Battery Eliminator Circuit which supplies power for
the rx and servos and cuts off the motor power when the battery is low to
    maintain control.
For heavy duty stuff look at www.vantec.com
