My previously working BS2 is now coming up with (through the
editor) "Basic stamp 2 detected on COM3 but not responding! Check
power supply".
The power is fine.
Should I assume a dead stamp?

clue why.
Another toast question:
While checking some wiring issues, I shorted something to a pin, and
now PIN4 won't work (at least as an output), but all others seem
fine.
Does this seem like a plausible failure?

one port number, while it has a different number in DOS. Programs that use
the Windows API talk to one port while non-API programs and DOS applications
work on another port. These things drove me crazy at the last job until I
figured them out.
