Any speech chips ?

I'm looking for speech chips/ics that accept plain or phonetic text and creates
an audio voice based on this text.
So plenty of people seem to know the SP0256,... there also seems to be a SP0250
(I'm not familiar with that one)...
Are there ANY other ic's outthere ? I have seen some at Oki, Philips, etc. are
there any people out there that can tell me and other Stampers how to get some
nice robotic voice added to their Stamp project without paying a bundle for
it....

This one is like the SP0256 in terms of sound making capability, but
requires a LOT more attention to flow control. My advice is if you don't
have a SP0250 staring you in the face, don't go looking for one.

Years ago a friend of mine did this on a Commodore 64 computer. Not sure
which chips he used but as he typed in a phrase, you would get the tinny
metallic voice coming out of the speaker. Worked well for the technology of
the time.

The Commodore was able to read text through the speaker using only
software. I forget the name of the program - "Doctor Watson" or something
like that.
thanks for the info, I used something like that with my old C64 in those
days,... It's unfortunally a software only solution (glueing a C64 to my
basic-stamp kind-a misses the point of being simple and compact ;).
Though I'm looking for a chip that can help me do just that ...

me in the face - I will have to buy one)

The chip that was used in the c64 was made by Motorola.
The chip number is 6581 and was called SID (Sound Interface Device)
It has 3 voices with full ADSR control.
One downfall is that it needs 12v.
