IRDA to Serial & Flame Detector

Dear Stampers, Hi.
I have two questions.
1) I am looking for a way to use the IRDA port of my portable for RS232-type
serial infrared communication. Under Windows 98, the IRDA software creates a
'virtual' COM4 port but i found no way of setting it up for 'normal' serial
communications. The receiver (TSOP1430 from Vishay) on the Stamp side seems
to react to the IR emmissions form the port - therefore it is possible to
set up a physical link. Does someone know of software to bypass or convert
the IRDA thing? Please help.
2) I want to build a low-cost sensor to spot the flame of a candle at 1-2
meters max. Sometime earlier a member of the list suggested to use a
glass-packaged 1N914 diode with reflector connected to a comparator (i think
it was P. Csonka). My background in electronics barely lets me understand
the principle. But when i come to the real thing (the circuit) i am simply
lost... Does the diode replace one of the resistors in a voltage divider
feeding one side of the amp? I can't even measure the resistance of the
diode. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Regards, and thanks in advance.
