The option you describe closely resembles
self-flagellation. The less masochistic technique is
to use a unique data pin for each IC, while commoning
the clock pin and (separately) commoning the chip
select pin to all IC's. With a common data pin there
is no guarantee that the line will be quiet except for
the data you want.
