overheating???

I am working on a simple project and seem to have a problem with it
just when I get to the finishing point. I am using a BS2e stamp and
am connecting it to a keypad via a 74922 and then lighting up LED's
using 75154. My power source is a 9V battery wired directly to the
chips. Everything works perfectly when I first plug it all in.
After about a minute or two the whole system locks up. In my main
program loop I have a counter incrementing and being written back to
the computer via a debug statement. I can monitor that the program
has gone into never-never land by watching the counter. I had this
circuit wired up and working for hours when it was on the
breadboards. Now I have put it all on a wire-wrap board and of
course I just snipped all the pins off after getting it all working.

My question is whether I need to regulate the power down to 5V before
putting it into the circuit, or if 9V is acceptable and standard.
From all the books and stuff that I've seen it seems like it should
work.

I'm new to electrical wiring and all so any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks
