PIC16F44 & growbot robot

hello all,
we are 2 students new on the list, and we have encountered some
difficulties to understand how to manage the dialogue
between a PIC16F84 and a growbot robot.
A serial word from a PC is entering the PIC on RB0.
we have to query the robot on its"state" and therefore
use 4 // bits of PORT B from the PIC
(the same pins we have been using to transmit commands
from the PIC to the ROBOT: ie move ahead, led on etc..)
the only instruction we see is shiftout on one pin...
could anybody help us please ?
