First of all, thanx to you all, but:

Is there any hint you can give me where I can find the very basic
information about the 555? I know, everybody except me knows what "use it as
an oscillator" means, but I dont.
Has anybody a link to 555-page? I tried to find one, but i couldnot figure
one out yet.

thanx very much again,

Uli

    Uli -

There is a shareware program here
    : http://www.programmersheaven.com/zone7/cat131/13471.htm
that will relieve you of some of the math required for testing various
circuits by hand. There used to be a similar Freeware 555 calculator,
but it eludes me at the moment.

This should help and save some time. Building each circuit in the beginning
    can be a tedious task.

    Check here: http://www.csmicrosystems.com/timerdesigner/index.html

CSMicro Systems has a nice 555 timer designer application, and it's freeware.

Jared Hoylman has just finished another article for interfacing the Stamp to
the PC serial port also. For those interested in using the Stamp with Visual
    Basic. Here: http://www.rentron.com/VisualBasic.htm

His new article shows how to send data to the PC from the Stamp.

    testing a ltc1298 AD converter.
What the hell did the world do before there were newsgroups?

Note that Bob's circuit as designed is meant for voltages greater
than 5 volts, specifically a 12 volt battery pack. You originally
asked for a circuit in the 0-5 volt range.

The LM331 (8-pin, $1.50) is meant for linear V/F conversion:
