stepper motor control w/stamp

Hey everyone,
I've been using the stamp for about 4 months now and am getting to
a point where I want to use it in projects. How hard is it to
configure the stamp with a stepper motor? Maybe something simple
like a 4 phase (90 degrees) stepper motor. If anyone can pass on
ideas it would be appreciated. Thanks.

The stamp is a great way to control or drive stepper motors. First, you
need to decide if the stamp is going to provide phase drive signals to pass
elements or clock pulses and direction information to a driver circuit. If
the later, than check out the Allegro UCN5804
http://www.allegromicro.com/sf/5804/index.htm . I've been using this since
it first came out and it is by far the easiest and most robust (not to
mention affordable) unipolar controller driver around for small steppers.
Several mail order houses have the UCN5804 as a stand alone part or built
into a driver board. If you by such a board, leave the clocking and
direction control off and let the stamp do the work! If you decide you want
to have the stamp drive the phases through pass elements, you can do it a
simply as connecting an L293D H bridge (good resource here is
http://www.cs.uiowa.edu/~jones/step/circuits.html#bipolar ) . This approach
has the problem of tying up the stamp during stepping and doesn't allow you
to easily monitor external switches, pots, etc that you might be using for
position feedback. However, if you know you want to move 100 steps in one
direction it's a very simple way to get going. One last thing. 90 degree
steppers are a bit more difficult to deal with and a little harder to find.
Lots of steppers in old floppy drives and hard drives!
A good place to start is the Wirz site
http://www.wirz.com/stepper/index.html,
http://www.wirz.com/stepper/overview.html, and of course,
http://www.hth.com/filelibrary/txtfiles/losa.txt .
good luck,
Mike

Look into UCN 5804
