Yes, driving a stepper as a bipolar will produce more torque than as a
unipolar. Most (6 and 8 wire) unipolars can be wired and driven as a
bipolar. If you set them up as 1/2 coil (6 wire) or parallel (8 wire) you
will give up some low speed torque, but greatly increase the torque at
higher RPMs.
