Neal,
I like both the books mentioned below and suggest
looking at copy of the ARRL "Radio Amateur's Handbook"
which comes out yearly and is available in many libraries.
It has a lot of practical stuff as well as some
theory - with a bias toward RF applications
And practice ohm's law problems! And note Kirchoffs
law - so many things can be solved by an understanding
of current flow.
Good luck and have fun - prove that a 1/2 watt resistor
_can_ take 10 watts! [noparse][[/noparse]what's that funny smell??] :-)

The Art of Electronics is a very thick book, over 1000 pages in a
Books by Don Lancaster are good, the CMOS cookbook comes to mind.
