button resistor

I am confused as to resistor to put in button circuit.

Stamp manual on p. 249/250 shows a 10K resistor.

Scott Edwards in his "Programming........Basic Stamp Computer" on p. 74 says 1K to 470k.

I wish to use as low and safe resistor as possible since an led will be inserted between the led and ground (which can also be an outputed to by the same pin the button goes to).· The pin is made an output to lite the led when the button is in dissuse.· This saves a pin.· The higher the resistor the less brite the led and this is· the reason for the lowest/safe resistor.· Suggestions/reasoning please and Thankyou in advance.

Look at the schematic for the Activity Board -- good example of switch / LED
    setup.
