Programming the Stamps

I can give this bit of advice, find an old 286/386/486 laptop and load DOS 6
on it and the stamp programs.

Old computers are the basis for all of the stamp programming I do here at
the National Science Center - Fort Discovery. A large number of our
exhibits use one or more Stamps in them.

Old laptops can be found at yard sales and other places for as little as
"FREE" because its old. I will not give up my 286 laptop because all of all
the exhibits software is on it for the stamps.

Thanks for that insight. I've actually been making intial probes into
ebay, etc. and it looks like a CPU can be had for cheap.
I've never worked with DOS, always with a GUI on Mac, so I was thinking
a Windows OS would be easier to convert to. Can Windows (say V. 95 an
up) run well on these older processors?
What is the minimum CPU requirement for running the PBasic Windows
version?
Thanks.

Cheers,

An alternative is get a cheap used Laptop from Ebay. You can get a color
screen pentium 90 with cdrom and floppy for around $150, an 486 mono screen
with no cdrom is well under $100. Most of these will have a bad, or weak
battery. Who cares, you are going to leave it plugged in all the time
anyways. I use an old 486 color laptop for my stamp programming it works
great, and my main desktop is not tied up with stamp prototyping stuff in
the way. I would not recommend below a 486-75 16 meg if you use the win95
Stamp software. Not because of the stamp software, but because of Win95
itself hogging memory. If you use the dos based software a 386 8 meg laptop
works nicely, I did this before I had a spare 486 color laptop. Expect the
owner of a 386 laptop to pay you to take it away :)

Thanks for the specs. I only know Macs and this narrows my search
considerably. If anyone happens across a good deal in their surfing,
give a ping at

BTW, any experience with trnasistors controlling relays?

For the BS, I use a Compaq 486/33 16MB ram with Win95 OSR2.
The secret is to clean (reformat) the hard disk and install a bare windows 95
without accessories and a 800*600 256colours screen.
The speed is then sufficient. The only problem is the disk capacity (<100MB)
does not allow to store all my BS documentation on this machine.
Note: I got the complete Compaq for FREE. It is networked with my
other machine, but I never tried to network mixed Wintel - MAC machines.

I'm sensing this might be the direction: the Way Of the Groveler ;)

You know, the thought of cross platform networking hadn't even crossed
my mind, but now that you mention it....

Thanks for the tips.
