Magnetic Sensors

Hi Gang:

I am trying to tie a switch into the stamp that changes state when a magnet
is passed by it. The magnet will be up to 3" away and there will also be a
1" thick aluminum wall in this 3" space. The magnet in use will probably
weigh about 1/2 lb. and will have a fairly strong field (Amp-Turns at this
time are unknown).

Do reed switches work well in this type of application? Failing that will
the Cherry/Micronas sensors listed in Digikey do the trick? I know there are
some commercial sensors out there that will work but they are bulky and
expensive ($80 + and that is the vendor's wholesale price never mind the
mark up!). Regardless of what is used, I know that I will need a series
resistor and an optocoupler to interface this doo hickey into the BS-2.

Any other suggestions or readily available products that will work in this
application are also welcome. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Depending how strong is your magnet, reed relay should work fine,
directly connected with Stamp (just a pull up or down resistor will be
needed), without any interface. It is very cheap and easy to try.
Another approach is use a Hall effect swicth chip, but this probably
    will additionaly require an amplifier.
