Can ASCII go straight into the BSII, or do I need to
use a MAX232, or MAX233 to shift the level of the
RS-232?

Just make sure you use inverted logic levels and use a current limiting
resistor (22k) for serial-in communications. See the serin and serout
commands in the basic stamp manual.
