counting serin commas

I am still re-learning basic here and need to read a serin command from pin 8 at 16572 (4800) baud. It is the data from a GPS coming in and I am waiting for the GPRMC sentence. In that sentance are sixteen different pieces of info I am using that are seperating by commas. It would be simple if the length of the fields did not change but they do so I need to count the commas instead. Any ideas??
