Solved - BS2 and PAK8 help needed.

Dear all

Had a chance to try a few things last night.
The solution is at the bottom but this is what I tried first as suggested by
Al.

I tried putting the 10k resistor across the resonator.
I got no response at all even after restting the bs2.

I then tried the caps to earth on the resonator.
Again no response even after resetting the bs2.

I havnt got access to an osciliscope so cant test that the resonator
is starting. An osciliscope is on my long list of wants.

I tried hooking up the reset pin of the bs2 to the reset pin of the
PAK. This didnt help. Should I leave the +5v supply on the PAKs
reset pin ? I tried with and without but it didnt work.

I decided to try powering the PAK up before the stamp from a seperate
source.
Then powering up th stamp.
This worked a treat !!
So it looks like, as you say, a slow Vdd.

Could it be the regulator Im using? I got the cuircit out of a maplin
catalogue. Its using a LM2930T with a 0.1uf cap on the +9v input
and a 100uf capacitor on the output. Im getting 4.8v.

The solution .....
I put a short pause at the start of my stamp code before I try to
communicate with the PAK8 so giving it a chance to power up and settle down.
It worked !!!!!

Theres one for the FAQ Al.

Thanks for all the help.

Gordon

Saw your response. Not sure if i understand but the 100 uf cap should
be on the input of the regulator and the 0.1 uf on the output.
does this make sense. Its something about capacitor charge time and
    current out of regulator.

I'd have swapped the 100uF and .1uF cap on your regulator. You want to
filter the input not the output. A 100uF cap will put a crimp in your Vdd
    rise time.

Typically all the PAKs (except the PAK-IX which loads constants from EEPROM)
will start much faster than the Stamp. If you hook the reset lines together,
remove the 5V from the PAK's reset pin.
