Newbie here :-) (Need recommendations)

I was hoping to get recommendations on what hardware I would need to
begin a particular project. I'm a complete newbie who knows nothing
about microcontrollers, and was hoping that someone could give me an
idea about where to start.
My immediate project only entails very simple control commands. The
idea is to be able to close and open any of 4 circuits in either of
14 different pre-programmed sequences. Each sequence will have as
many as 66 total commands, and will be executed with in approximately
2 minutes. I want to be able to press a button at anytime along a 5
hour time-line, to activate any of those 14 command sequences with an
accuracy between each individual command no worse than 1/60th of a
second.
Am I asking too much?
Anyway advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

manual is quite good. Lots of hardware and code examples. Check out the
Parallax site as well.
A good site that details the timing characteristics is Tracy Allen's site:

Your use of Yahoo! Groups is subject to http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/
3 or 4 things happen per cycle, this a Stamp can do. If you are concerned
with WHERE in each 60 Hz cycle it happens, a Stamp alone will not get you
much closer than that.
Can you be more specific without giving away your million-dollar idea?

be manually switching on whatever command sequence I
decide on, is not(can not) be a factor. I just need it
to start when I "press the button".
But the timing between each command in whichever of
the 14 sequences I choose must be extremely accurate.
***This is the reason for the Basic Stamp.
