Newbie Help With LCD

Im new at the basic stamp
i need help all i want to do is hook a 2x16 lcd to my basic stamp 2
and i want it to say things on the screen basic stuff so when a input
is on it says on the lcd ON and when its off it says OFF and when another
input is on it says OPEN or somthing just simple
but i have no idea howto do it
if someone can explain really simple how to do it cause i dont understand
the way in the book thanx

There are many different lcd comm. protocols- some are serial comm. and some
are parallel bus. Can you give more details?
