Long Haul Data Question????

The shop I work at has several machines several of which
my boss wants to receive operational data from. My problem
is the distance from machine to the office computer that will
intercept the info. I would like to daisy chain from one machine
to the next. The overall distance may exceed 1000ft. I want to
use the BS2 to keep cost down and use standard cat 5 cable
if that's possible.
What protocol could I use for this???
Any help or ideas appreciated!!
Thanks

Complete" would be worth a look as well, as it shows how to network in
RS-485 with stamps. See the Parallax site for links to "Serial Port
Complete".

May not get this kind of range without shielded cable though.

of twisted pair (1K terminated) and it is very robust. It is running
among other cables with variable power 300 VAC @ 2A without any
problems. For 2 years no one bit was ever lost. You may try a simple
system before expend time and money implementing a RS485 and cat5.

i would suggest 485 protocol. Over 4000 feet capable and addressable. but
use shielded twisted pair
