Windows ME Serial Port trouble with BS2

Hello,
Very bizarre - that's all I can say. A while back, I posted a
message to this board about a problem I was having with my laptop,
running Windows ME, locking up my BS2 chip until I removed the serial
cable from either my computer or the BOE.
Part of my original circuit, was a 555 set to pulse a
piezo "beeper" at 1Hz, by using a BS2 output to input to the 555
control pin (Pin 4) - This is described as "Off loading tasks" in the
BS2 manual.
Well, in an effort to make my PCB smaller, by reducing components,
I decided to just get the BS2 to pulse the beeper via a transistor.
Low an behold, all my serial port woes disappeared !
I have NO idea why, but thought this might be interesting to this
board.
Regards, John.
