PCB and Protel 99 SE

Hello everybody,

I downloaded Protel 99 SE trial ver last night to play with it and
eventually get some PCB drawing done. But, am having some trouble
using and even understanding the concept of PCB. I basically want to
design the PCB layout with BS2 and few other components on it (single
sided only). I'm totally ignorant of this whole PCB subject.

How do I place a component that matches BS2 pin numbers, dimensions,
etc. What I found in the components library was a 24 pin IC. I placed
it on the PCB layout, but, the pin dimensions (distance apart, etc)
are not changeable.

Please help. If you guys can even point me to a simpler PCB design
tool that you have used for BS2, that will be very very appreciated.
Please help

thanks in advance
nagi

The BS2 is a 24-pin IC with 0.600" pin spacing. Most other chips are 0.300
spacing. You should be able to find another template for the wider chip.

Thanks.
Any resources or other tools that provide the template? What is the tool that you guys usually use?

Please advise.

thanks

Nagi,
I sent out a request for developed libraries for the Parallax products,
last week. I don't think most hobbyists that are using stamps are using
Protel. It is an expensive product and has a somewhat lengthy learning
curve. To use the PCB development in the way that it was intended, you must
develop both the schematic and PCB libraries. I will eventually do this for
the BS1 and BS2's. If you simply want to hand route a board, you can use a
24 pin DIP footprint and manually route the board. This will allow you to
create camera ready artwork or gerber files. If this is a one of a kind
thing, as much as I like the Protel system, I'd recommend that you use one
of the many freeware, shareware, or cheaper electronic CAD systems.

I have had great success with ExpressPCB which is a free download
from www.expresspcb.com. You can even submit your design for
manufacturing over the web. I've used their miniboard service for
three designs and have been very pleased with the results.

Details of the designs are at www.high-techgarage.com/products.php

Hi Jeff,

I downloaded ExpressPCB yesterday, and tried it. I find it easy to use, and
all standard functions are present.
Now I'd like to use it to make my own PCBs. The problem is the printout : I
get the layout on a gray background, and the grid dots are printed as well.
I can't use it like this. Is there a trick to print layouts without
background nor grid dots ?
Or maybe there is another freeware to do the job...

Thanks

Phil.

Phil: I have written an article for N&V addressing this problem of the
express PCB printout. I dont know when it will be published however. To get
around this limitation,
1) Turn all corners, component details, grid etc off, set your traces to
black background, Set your border to black also.
2) take a screen capture (prt scrn key)
3) paste the capture into a photo editing program (lviewpro)
4) print out the captured image to the correct size. ( photo printer)
I use lview pro for my photo editing program and use Photo printer, to
print my images to the correct size. Both of these are available on my
website at Http://MntnWeb.Com/Software.htm
If you wish, write me off the list, and I will send you more detailed steps.

I heard this was intentional to "encourage" you to have them make the boards for you.... they give you the software for free, but they want the revenuse from making the boards. :-)

Nagi: I think it was done intentionally, Express PCB is in the business of
manufacturing PCB boards. It is nice they have the usefull free software
however.

I don't know if anyone has answered your question yet
but you can try expressPCB. I have not used it yet
but I have downloaded the software.
They have free PCB software and if you stay within
there guidelines you can get 3 Double sided PCB's for
$59.
Download their software for free at www.expresspcb.com

I think the second option is the good one...

can't we send a bug report out to ExpressPCB and have them fix this instead? Or, was this done intentionally so we could not print our own PCB?

thanks

Phil: I have written an article for N&V addressing this problem of the
express PCB printout. I dont know when it will be published however. To get
around this limitation,
1) Turn all corners, component details, grid etc off, set your traces to
black background, Set your border to black also.
2) take a screen capture (prt scrn key)
3) paste the capture into a photo editing program (lviewpro)
4) print out the captured image to the correct size. ( photo printer)
· I use lview pro for my photo editing program and use Photo printer, to
print my images to the correct size. Both of these are available on my
website at Http://MntnWeb.Com/Software.htm
·If you wish, write me off the list, and I will send you more detailed steps.

Hi Kerry,

Many thanks for this idea. I think it's the only way to print something that
I can use. As I've seen in other messages, this must be a trick to encourage
you to have them make the boards for you...
I'll try your way !
Thanks again.
Phil.
