Motor Power Source

I have a general question concerning the amount of Volts and Amps for DCmotors.
·
If a motor has a label on it that says 9 VDC and 2 amps (for example),in general is this the maximum
that should be supplied to the motor or the minimum?
·

Thanks,

    Wayne:
With 9 volts applied to the motor, it should draw little current with no
load. As the motor is increasingly loaded, current will increase. The
label is informing you that the motor should not be loaded beyond where it
    needs more than 2 amps.

I think I understand what you are saying.
Let me see if I have this right....

If I supply 9V to the motor and the motor has nothing connected to it to
create resistance (no load), then the motor will not draw much current (use
    very little amps).
Then if I connect some type of gear or pulley system, which creates
resistance (increased load), then the motor will draw more current (use more
    amps.).

If that is correct, then does that mean it is normally SAFE to connect a
power supply/battery, which is 9V and 4amps, to a motor rated for 9V and
    2amps,
so long as the motor does not have an overload on it?
Is it safe to say the motor will only draw as much current/amps as it needs
    based on its load?

Thanks for the help; I guess this shows how much I understand about power
    usage.
