Compass and soldering

If I may, I'd like to ask about soldering this compass. The specs warn that
overheating will cause problems. That means that when I solder this puppy, I
will have a puddle of plastic when complete. To avoid that, is there a
standard socket that I can buy to fit this package?

As always, thanks for all the help.

Some kind of pliers could help to dissipate heat when soldering. Or you
could use individual female headers to make yourself a socket.

I spent more than an hour last Friday cruising the Radio Shack isle looking for
assorted items, and I don't remember seeing any female headers. I think I know
what you are referring to and I like the idea. Are these headers easy to find?
I will look again next time in there.
    Thanks

    Take a look at Digi-Key part # ED7150-ND. This is a 50 position socket
strip made by Mill-Max. The Mill-Max part # is 801-93-050-10-001.

The headers are like a single row of IC socket pins in a strip. You cut them
to the lenght you need and solder them in. Assuming the compass module will
plug right into a standard perfboard, this should work.

In the meantime, you can take a standard IC socket, and cut it in half, to
get two strips of rails that you could use in place of female headers. I
have done this many times. A small X-Acto hobby saw works nice for cutting
    them apart.
I dont recall how many pins the Compass is. Use the appropriate IC socket,
and you are ready to you

I think he said the pin spacing was about half of an IC. Don't know that I
would want to bend pins to get it to fit. Making an adapter board and
selling it may be a good deal for someone on the list.

Actually, it's not that difficult to bend the pins to get it to fit.
The compass has 12 pins... 3 on each side.

I took my BOE/BS2 with Dinsmore 1490 compass to work today. Inside
my truck it works perfectly. It's response is a bit slower than the
one in my truck (integrated with my rear-view mirror) but it's just
as accurate. It surprised me a bit since everyone was saying how you
can't get them near ANY metal and I was surrounded by several tons of
    Chevy Tahoe 4x4. Go figure...
