Output of Serial Data for Stepper Driver

Hi all!

I have an Alegro 5804 unipoloar stepper driver chip,
and (of course) a unipolar motor. I am trying to have
the Stamp communicate with the driver chip. The 5804
requires 2 inputs (1 to step, 2nd for direction). I'm
having some difficulty figuring out which command I
need to use from the Stamp to allow the 5804 to drive
the stepper motor. I've tried serout and a few other
commands, but the motor only twitches and makes very
shaky movement.

Has anyone worked with the Alegro 5804?

Any advice you could offer would be very much
appreciated.

Is there a better Stepper Motor driver chip on the
market?

Thanks in advance,

Todd

Sort of on this, but not... isn't there an h-bridge on a chip? I thought I
remembered seeing a chip that actually had two h-bridges on it, like the 556 has
two 555's. Anyone remember this chip or have used it?

I have never used the Alegro chip, but I have interfaced with other step and
direction controller chips. All you need to do is toggle the pin between
high and low for the step and do the same for the direction. No special
    commands involved.

Motorola makes the 754410 dual H bridge. I think you can get specs at
Acroname(chips too). It easily drives 1 amp motors with a heat sink.

    Todd,
Sorry, I've been away for a week and I know how frustrating it is to wait
for a reply from the group.
I've used the 5804 extensively for small unipolar steppers. If you contact
me directly and let me know what you are trying to accomplish, I'll be glad
to send you some BS2 code that works with the 5804.
