Does an 8 bit to serial kit exist?

I'm really enjoying all the beer and gas talk, and I hesitate to change the
subject, but here goes. I have a voice recognition kit and it requires 8 I/O
pins to drive it. I'd like to know if there exists a 8 bit to serial kit or
module I can build or buy, thus I don't use all the valuable i/o pins that the
stamp offers.
cheers from Alabama, ya'll

Hi Dave. Well, if you just need outputs, you can use a shift register.

If you really need 8 I/O pins, have a look at a PAK-III or PAK-IV. The
PAK-III takes 2 I/O on the Stamp, but gives you 8 I/O pins plus EEPROM. And
the I/O pins can do interesting things like PULSOUT, etc. (not just digital
I/O). The PAK III (and IV) only does one thing at a time (like the Stamp),
but the PAK and the Stamp can both work at once. The PAK-IV also takes two
lines, but gives you 16 of the same kind of I/O and some RAM (no EEPROM).

If you just need simple digital I/O (on/off) the PAK-I and II have spare I/O
pins you can use. So now you take 2 lines and get 8 or 16 simple I/O pins
plus floating point math operations. See my sig for the URLs. You can read
    the manuals online.
