Stamp Editor Crashes

When ever I download to the Stamp with the editor with the DEBUG
command in the code, the editor (stampw.exe) locks up right after the
Debug window pops up, requiring I do a Cntrl-Alt-Del / End Task to
recover.

I suspect this might be because I'm on Windows 2000. No problem when
I tried it on a Win98 laptop.

Anyone run into this?

Martin

Win2k is NT based and may have issues with the serial port. Does the serial
port work OK with an external modem or another serial device?

I used NT4 with my Palm Pilot and my GPS. Both use serial and work fine.
My stamp, however, locks up every time I use debug. Lately I just use my
LCD display to help me debug.

That might be because they're trying to directly manipulate the port ...
seems like they do some funny stuff with raising certain signals normally
used for handshaking, etc. In fact, as I recall, they don't even use the
    RX/TX lines for data communication.

Whoops ... guess I should've finished that thought ... direct manipulation
of hardware is not possible with NT/2k without an appropriate driver. There
are several drivers out there ... seems like one might be available at
    http://www.lvr.com (Jan Axleson's site ... I hope I got the URL right).

Is the editor DOS or Windows based? I figure the Palm and GPS are. This may
be the problem as NT is kinda goofy about running DOS stuff that talks to
    the ports directly.

Might try snagging a copy of some DOS-based com program to see if it works
with Win2k. If it does not, then you know it is not an issue with the Stamp
    editor.

I'm reasonably certain that the Palm Pilot is <<NOT>> Windows-based. It is
a proprietary operating system called PalmOS. You certainly don't use the
same programming tools to write app's for the Palm Pilot as you use for
    WinCE devices.

    Sorry,

To clear things up: The PalmOS is NOT windows based, although the software
to sync the Palm with a PC IS windows based and uses the serial port. My
stamp editor seemed to work fine with the older editor when I was using a
BS2. I first noticed the PC locking up after I started using a BS2SX. Has
    anyone else noticed this?

    Shaun,

You could be suffering from a device (IRQ) conflict on the PC. Check to see if
the Palm hotsync cable is using the same IRQ or COM port as the Editor. If they
are using the same resources, one needs to be shut down before the other is
    started.

    That's MY $0.02.

I think I may have the same problem and perhaps a solution. Some time
ago I downloaded the windows software on the parallax site...or off of
their cdrom...and it had a readme file titled
    BASIC_Stamp_Windows_Interface_Readme.txt

Here's an excerpt and perhaps fix to your problem. It worked for me
    anyway.

    "KNOWN PROBLEMS
On Windows NT machines, the Debug Terminal can not be closed and code can
not be re-downloaded if the Stamp is no longer sending data to the PC.
This problem will be fixed in a future version as soon as possible. A
workaround is to press the close button on the Debug Terminal window and
then press the reset button on the Stamp board. As soon as the Stamp
sends at least one character to the serial port, the Debug Terminal will
    close."

FYI, I'm running Windows 2000 with the windows version 1.096 of the Basic
Stamp Software. Perhaps this problem has been fixed in version 1.1 which
is now available on the parallax website.

I believe the problem here is not the com port on the Win2k machine
because I can send and receive between Hyperterminal and the Stamp
    with no problems.

Another post in this thread has indicated StampW has NT/2000 issues.

Hyperterminal is a Windows program that accesses the port through a Windows
driver. DOS applications talk directly to the port, which can be a problem
with NT / Win2K. Try connecting to the stamp via something like the old DOS
    Procomm or BananaTerm.

I asked tech support, they are aware of this "Bug" with the Debug
command and Windows 2000. A new version of WStamp is due out in
August to deal with this...no workaround at this time.

I have been running the stamp programs on win2K since I started. The
debug window works fine as long as debug commands are being sent to
it and you don't hit the close button on the debug window. As soon
as you hit the close button and nothing is coming from your stamp the
program gets confused and hangs. If I then get the stamp to send
another debug the window will close normally and life is good.

I am glad someone here brought this up, I was planning on it, but
hadn't quite got around to it. I am heartened to hear that parallax
is planning on makeing the editor NT kernel compatible.
