"Bend" Sensor?

Hey everyone,
Back in college I remember some guys used what they called "bend" sensors
on a micromouse robot to sense walls inside the maze. If I remember
correctly, they were actually variable resistors which were thin strips
approximately 2 to 3 inches in length. As they would flex the resistance
would change up to 60kohms or something like that. I'm not quite sure
what these things were officially called, nor do I have a way to get in
touch with any of these guys. Has anyone ever heard or seen these things
and if so can you put me in touch with a place that sells them?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Part# 150551
Flex Sensor
Resistance: 10K to 40K resistance when bent.
Price: $10.95
Not a cheap item, but they are for sure fun to play with.

Bruce

fibers that were developed a few years back. The muscle fibers worked by
sending voltage through them, and the more voltage, the more they
contracted. These sound similar. I can't really help you find them, but
maybe this information would help others find it for you.

Sandwich a piece of conductive foam between two thin strips of copper. pin
the three layers together at each end with an inert substance like a nylon
screw using a thin piece of insulator between the two pieces of copper at
each end. when the laminate bends it compresses the foam reducing
resistance. It's pretty rudimentary but should work. I think most of the
foam that ICs are shipped in is carbon based conductive foam. Of course you
could spend the ten buck at Jameco and have an infinitely superior product
:)
product in a bag before sealing. They will send you free samples if you ask.
The sample sensors they sent me were approximately 6 inches long and varied
their resistance from 1k to 15kohms. Anyways good luck, Rob, fiveslo@a...
for each finger and they can be found for $10 or so
