Shift Register Problem

I've recently purchased a pair of HC595 and 597 shift registers for
expanding IO pins on my stamp. I have 2 cascading 595's working
together fine for output, but I cant seem to get the 597's working
properly.
Can someone briefly tell me how I have to wire and program the 597 to
the stamp properly for it to work?
