R2D2 Drive Sys????

Hello everyone,
A friend of mine who is nuts over anything that has to do with Star
Wars asked me if I could build an R2 unit. I figure that the hardest
part of this project could be the drive system for the robot. We
want
the unit to be life size so the drive system has to be adequate to
support the weight.
I was wondering if any of you can direct me to any useful sites that
would help me get this project under way.
I also wanted to thank jffgres for his code on the sounds. It will
be
the perfect touch when the project is finished.
Thanks ahead of time.
Frankg.

You might want to start looking here:
It's a website dedicated to the construction of R2D2 Robots.

A Heathkit Hero Jr would be a good platform to start with.

Would electric screwdriver motors work? The can have a lot of torque.
Theiur slower speed will make controlling the robot easier. I figure I'll
try an R2-D2 later this summer after readfing all those R2-D2 webring sites.
The drive motors need to be in the back two feet. The center-mounted foot
up front can be an idler wheel. Steering can be done by differentially
driving the back two motors. Get an H-bridge so the BS-2 can operate
sensors whjile the robot drives around. I figure I'll make mine version a
line follower, with the line snesor in the fron wheel.
