RC Speed Control

Hello,
I am new to the basic stamp and I have a question. I have a basic
stamp II, an electric speed control (traxxas xl1), and a hobby motor.
I have tried to treat the speed control just like a modified servo
and it will only spin the motor for a moment. I have the speed
control connected to a BOE board in the servo connector (black to
black red to red white to control) and the BOE board and the speed
control are seperately powered. I cannot for the life of me figure
out why a servo will work and the speed control will not. Any help is
greatly appreciated.
