Remember that all Dinsmore compasses are built with MAGNETIC needles
(with hall effect sensors) and they CANNOT BE USED NEAR ANOTHER MAGNETIC
OR IRON DEVICES because mutual interference.

    Hello stampers,

I want to use the BS2 or BS2sx in an "electronic compass".

Is there somebody who knows an integrated circuit that can be used as a
    compass sensor?

    Thx in advance

    Michel,

Look at Jameco Electronics (www.jameco.com) for:

    Part Number 126703
    Vector 2X Compass Module

You can get a PDF with the specs and application examples from the Jameco web
site. It's more than a single IC, in that it has x-axis and y-axis sensing
coils too. The package is 1.5 by 1.3 by .39 inches.

What about the 1490 digital compass from Dinsmore Group. This compass
is way cheaper; $14.00 and is easy to interface to the stamp. Go to:

    www.dinsmoregroup.com

Well, I buy from wirz.com because the shipping is FAST... the support is
incredible... and they are a great company to deal with. Is everything
about saving a few pennies? I'd rather pay twice as much for something and
get the quality of customer service that a company like Wirz offers than to
deal directly with a manufacturer where IF you can get them to return an
    email you're doing good.

The "SMART" thing to do is to buy from someone you know and trust...like
    Wirz.

By the way, I bought my Dinsmore 1490 Compass from Wirz and it works
    great!!!

You do realize the the Dinsmore compass thingy will only give you direction
in only eight steps: N-NE-E-SE-S-SW-W-NW don't you?

An 8-point compass is what you get with just ONE Dinsmore 1490.

Add a second 1490 and rotate it 22.5 degrees. Now you get a 16-point
compass in a very easy to read 8-bit byte :-) Load it into an 8 bit
parallel-to-serial converter, then clock the serial data into one pin on
the Stamp. Use a lookup table in software to convert the byte into a
    human-readable heading...

Another option is to rotate a single Dinsmore 1490 with a servo...

You can compensate for this -- ever wonder what the green and red balls
mounted beside a ships compass were for?

I have been following the 'compass' thread, and I want to thank everyone
that has contributed to it. At some point I plan to build a digital compass,
and the Dinsmore 1490 sensor is made to order since I only need 8 points of
resolution. Several years ago I saw the Dinsmore sensor in a project, but in
the meantime I have been unable to locate the project article, and I also
couldn't remember the name of the company.
As for dealing with the company, I haven't yet ordered a sensor, but I did
e-mail them requesting a data sheet for the sensor. The following morning I
received a reply with an attached data sheet that gave me exactly what I was
looking for. For some reason they got a message that the reply was
undeliverable (not sure why), so they went to the point of calling me
directly to see if the reply had been received, so that gave me a very
favorable first impression of the company.
As for whoever mentioned Wirz, regardless of who I purchase the sensor from,
I now have another source of harder-to-find parts for upcoming projects, so
I thank you for that as well.

trying to figure out how to write program, to contol a servo, and
keep it it on a certain compass heading of my chosing..for instance
if I add a button to a stamp and the heading is north how do I
control a model boat, to keep it on that heading
