Takes a minimum of six pins to do a simple but functional parallel
connection to a HD44780-compatible LCD.

No...assuming you get a HD44780-compatible LCD.

That would be a parallel connection to a ~$10 or less, surplus or
pulled LCD from someplace like BG Micro (www.bgmicro.com). There are
plenty of coding examples available and help from folks on this list
to help you should you choose to go this route.

using a LCD with my BS2sx but I can't find any cheap serial LCD's
(for less then $40). I found plenty of parallel LCD's but I am not
sure how to hook these up to the stamp. If I buy a parallel LCD do I
need to buy one of those extra controller boards (one place was
selling one as an LCD Backpack)? I'm looking for the cheapest route
possible.
regular Stamp in my book Microcontroller Projects with Basic Stamps (on
special this month -- http://www.al-williams.com/awce/).
The serial LCDs are very nice since they only take one pin and are as easy
as you can imagine to use.
I think Jon Williams also has some LCD code -- maybe at the Nuts & Volts
site?

I've used this. It works, but I have always come back to Scott's Backpack.

Have a look at our new Econo-LCD Serial Interface Kit. It is a fully
beffered 9600 baud serial interface (you supply the LCD, or we have
a 2x16 unit available) for the equivalent of about $20 US

The StampWorks manual (available for download at www.parallaxinc.com) has a
whole section on connecting Stamps to a parallel LCD.

If you really get into a bind with I/O count and can't buy a backback module,
I've interfaced an LCD with just three wires through ·74HC595 shift register
(about $1) -- kind of a poor man's backpack. ·It takes just a little more
code than standard (6 line) interfacing.

text. I kept looking at the kit wondering why it came with only a
regular BS2 but a parallel LCD.
