Do I need a carrier board to be able to use my basic stamp?
If, on the website, it says its a backorder, expected #/#/##...does
that mean that I can order it but they won't have it to send it
before then?

socket to plug the chip into. The chip already has a built in 5V regulator
so as long as you aren't usuing too much current you should be able to hook
up a 9V battery directly to the stamp and add whatever circuitry you want to
it.
