Beginner - Where to get help.

I am a beginner and need some direction on where to go to learn about
electronics as used with the BSII stamp.
I know very little if anything about the electronics behind building
schematics or how to determine what it takes to make a motor stop and go or
anything like that.
I am an experienced programmer of over 10 years.
I purchased a basic stamp II and a lot of other testing equipment /
electronic qiz-mos (capacitors, resistors, etc.).
I built a set of LEDs on a breadboard and wrote a program that counts
between 0 and 255 and shows each bit via the LEDs.
1 = LED is on and 0 = LED is off.
So I know how to use the basic stamp as far as programming, downloading and
testing.
What I am wondering is there any books or web sites or anything that can
take a person who knows absolutely nothing about electronics and teach them
on what the requirements are to make a motor stop and go or how to connect
sensors for a variety or purposes, how to read and understand schematics?
I need something that will start out slow and explain things in plain
English.
I know there is a lot to learn but I don't know where to start.
Thanks,

Start with "What is a Microcontroller. Then go to "Basic Analog and
Digital". Then jump into whatever interest you. Great learning series.
