    Hi -

It would be nice to know your name in future communications.

Many things are confusing when you first begin Stamping,
The Getting Started section of the web site is just one of them : )

The BASIC II Stamp is a complete unit, with everything you need to begin.
Nothing is necessary for you to do, except to begin programming the Stamp.

The OEM BASIC Stamp II is for those who need to save more money. It is the
SAME as the BASIC Stamp II BUT it requires the user to perform some work
before attempting to program. The work required is to assemble the package.

The package consists of the following elements (parts):

    PBASIC interpreter,
    EEPROM,
    resonator,
    DB-9,

and all the resistors and transistors needed to build a BASIC Stamp II.
Presented in a 20-pin SIP module format with standard 0.1" spacing. The PC
board includes labeled component locations with visible traces between
parts. PBASIC interpreter and EEPROM are socketed to allow for replacement.

Once this is assembled, and soldered, one can THEN begin to use it. The purpose
of this format (OEM) is generally for inclusion in another manufactured unit.
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. Thus is may be USED by anyone,
and there is a special price for them this weekend, but it's intended use
    is for
inclusion in another piece of equipment. Your savings comes from the fact
that the unit DOES NOT have to be assembled prior to sale by Parallax.

If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask them. There is
generally someone monitoring this list all hours of the day and night. We
too are Stampers, just like yourself.

We hope you will enjoy Stamping as much as we do.

    Regards,

    Bruce Bates

My error, it appears as though you ARE CORRECT ! Thanks for catching that.

    >Yup - I guess they do. I hadn't noticed it before.

The Parallax part number for the assembled version is #27290
The Parallax part number for the kit is #27291

I'd sure say so - long as they can do the work, if they get it unassembled.
As far as the assembled part - THAT can't be beat. I believe if you look
around you may find that they're meeting competition. That's what makes a
    marketplace.
