Remote wireless monitoring of robots

I have been wanting to have a wireless setup with my robot-in-progress so I
can look at its sensors and other things without sticking my head inside to
look at LEDs and without worrying about it eating its own cable. I came
across a set of wireless units from radio shack, the receiver and
transmitter are both about $10. They each have one input or output
(depending on which device :)), so how can I transmit more than an on/off
signal? I know there is a way to do it, because it is done all the time,
but I don't even have a vague idea. I suppose it has something to do with
carrier waves, which are completely over my head. I planned on having a
stamp on the receiving end to decode the signal, btw. Another idea I came
up with while writing this would be to connect (one of the pins on) the DB9
on my stamp to the transmitter so that I could possibly hook the other end
to my computer's DB9 and get wireless DEBUG text from the robot... would
that work? I hope someone understands this, because my last robot ran amok
several times, with the casualties being the walls of my house, and I had no
idea what went wrong :)

It sounds like you're using the TWS-434 & RWS-434 RF modules.
If you are -- we just posted a project using these RF modules with
    the BASIC Stamp at: http://www.rentron.com/Stamp_RF.htm

This is a simple application, but can easily be expanded to transmit
temperature data, remote control signals, and just about anything else
using the BASIC Stamp to send/receive wireless data.
