Gents -
Said differently - don't use a proportional font for viewing ASCII art.
Any fixed pitch font (also called monospacing) will do fine. FWIW I use
Andale MONO font for viewing.

Agreed. Better opt for plain ascii text in a monospace font.
Some people have their email set for HTML, maybe as a default from a
certain large company. The HTML option has several downsides for
email, like, attachments and business cards that most of us filter
right into the trash can, or recycling bin, depending...
Ascii art can be tagged in HTML to force a monospace font:
