Nick,

It sounds like your power supply is fine, so let's look at some of the things that could get in the way of communication. Here are some general trouble-shooting tips for the BASIC Stamp 2, 2SX, and 2e.· fiveslo@aol asked what kind of carrier board you are using.· If none of these general suggestions work, it would also help to know what kind of BASIC Stamp, PC and operating system you have (as well as the carrier board).·

1) Make sure the Stamp Editor is set to communicate with your particular BASIC Stamp.· Click Edit and select Preferences.· In the Preferences window, click the Editor Operation tab and check your Default Stamp Mode.· If you have a BASIC Stamp 2, make sure that field is set to BS2.· If you have a BASIC Stamp 2 SX, make sure that field is set to BS2SX, etc.· If you've trying to run a program with the .BSX extension (a program for the BASIC Stamp 2 SX) when you have a BASIC Stamp 2 (which needs a BS2 extension), you may continue to have problems.· Make sure that the active program in your editor is saved with the appropriate file extension for your BASIC Stamp.· When you select Save as from the File menu, the bottom field in the Save as window displays the file extension and allows you to select the correct file type for your BASIC Stamp.·

Note: If you ever start using several different BASIC Stamps, make sure to look up the "Stamp Directive" in our documentation.· When you use the Stamp Directive, your file extension will no longer matter.

2) Disable any palmtop software on your computer.· If you have a palmtop, there is usually a palmtop icon next to the clock display on gray bar with the start button (Windows 95 & up).· Right-click & select disable.

3) Re-check your serial cable, and make sure it·IS NOT a null-modem cable.· Only use a serial (extension) cable.· Reason being, a null modem cable crosses lines 2 and 3, and they need to be straight through.·

4) If none of these things work, try a different com port if you have one.· Also, if you have a serial modem on com 0 and your com port is on com 2, some older PCs have communication·problems if you are on-line at the same time you are trying to program a BASIC Stamp.· (Same deal for com 1 & com 3.· So, for the sake of trouble-shooting, stay off-line when testing Stamp Editor to BASIC Stamp communication.

5) Try a different computer.· If a different computer is not available to you, an alternative test would be to download the DOS software for your BASIC Stamp and save it on a bootable floppy.· Boot the computer from that floppy and see if the DOS software will talk with the BASIC Stamp.· If your BASIC Stamp does respond, then Matt Fillmore's bios settings suggestion could be the culprit.· Windows 3.1 is another possible culprit because our Windows based software works for Windows 95 and up.

Good luck.

Andy

Subject: [basicstamps] ACK!! WHY WON'T THIS THIN DOWNLOAD (HELP QUICK PLESASE!!!)

After searching the message boards and realizing my problem is a tad to basic for them I have decided to send you this plea for help.· The BASIC editor says that the stamp is detected but not responding, check power supply.· I have a 9V battery, running through a 1000microF capactor, running to pins 24 and 23 (positive and negitivly respectivally).· When checked with a voltmeter the chip is recieving 9V of power and is sending 5V of power off pin 21(the regulated output), i have checked, re checked and bought a new serial cable as well but this does not fix the problem.· What suggestions do you have to fix this thing, it is for a science fair project due in january and a speedy reply would be much appricated.
