OT: Infrared remote converter

Has anybody ever run across a device for using an infrared remote
control out of visual range of the controlled equipment?

I'm thinking about a small add-on for an infrared remote which would
convert the infrared signal to an RF signal. This signal would then be
received by an RF "repeater" which would be located near the
controlled A/V equipment and would receive the RF signal and convert
it back to infrared.

This isn't necessarily a stamp idea, but I though maybe someone in
this group would have seen such a device or perhaps a design for one.
It would be useful for controlling an A/V system remotely while using
wireless headphones in any room of the house.

Dick:
Radio Shack sells exactly that device.

Yes, the Radio Shack device is sort of what I am looking for.

But I had in mind a very small transmitter which fits on the end of
the IR remote and would go anywhere in the house with the remote. The
Radio Shack unit requires that the IR receiver/RF transmitter be set
up in a fixed location, limiting the remote use to only that location
or the original equipment location.

Since I posted here, I did some more looking on the web. I did find a
really clever one at:

http://www.acerneweb.net/Html/rcextender/phaser/index.html

but I have no idea of price or where to actually buy one.

Another one I found is more what I had envisioned, but looks a bit
large and cumbersome:

The X-10 system also supports a complete RF videoSender module as shown here
[ http://www.x10.com/products/x10_vk30a.htm ] which uses RF to transmit
audio and video anywhere in the house. This is an addition to the prior system.

Dick,

I have exactly what you are asking for. The one I have I got about
3 or 4 years ago and I think I replaced the battery once. It fits
on the end of the remote and converts commands to RF signals. The
receiver is aimed at the TV / VCR. The name on the device is Leapfrog
and is / was made by TERK Technologies Plainview NY 11803. the aprox.
dimensions are 1.3"W X 1"H X .75"D

Transmitter model IR-4 Battery N-cell 12V alkaline
Receiver model IR-5 115 VAC

Don't remember the exact price but close to $60? I got it mail order
from a catalog I got in the mail. Haven't heard of it lately.

Don Zacharie

Just checked their website (guessed right first try)
<http://www.terktech.com>, but did not see my model.
