Miniature gears

Hello All,

I'm working on my robot that is currently a sort of miniaturized (can be found at http://nagi.crosscity.com/basicstamp/alibe). I'm looking forward to further miniaturizing it with smaller gears. Currently, I'm using the Cirrus's miniature servos.·Recently, I·opened up the servos and got the motors and the gears. From what I see there, it seems that the servo casing is occupying a lot of room. If I can find a mechanism to mount these gears onto something more custom to save that extra space, I can then in effect miniaturize it.

My question are as follows: Please help with any of your comments.

··· 1.··· Is there a dealer who sells miniature gears that I can use off the shelf and hook up the mini-motor ?
··· 2.··· I'd like to use the same gears found in the servo, but, want to get away from the casing. Can you please give me ideas on how to accomplish this.

I have a 1" X 1" space that I can work with, if I can get away from using the casing that will really save me more room.

Thanks a lot in advance.

nagi

    Hi Nagi,

I don't have the servos that you speak of in front of me to look at, so I might be way off base.· My thought is to use a high speed rotary grinder to remove the mechanical and structural non critical spaces in the existing casing.· Then you still have something to hold the works in proper alignment, and possibly come up with some useful room in the un-needed parts of the case.

If you don't like that, Jameco· www.jameco.com and Edmund Scientific's both sell miniature gear sets.

Glad to hear your interesting project is still moving forward,
    Greg

towerhobbies.com sells servo gear sets, ranging in price form $3 to $30, mounting them would require you to find appropriate shafts and a pinion gear for your motor that you want to use. Basically sandwich the gears between 2 plates with the shafts mounted (with careful measurement) and mount your motor to drive the gears. But you're winding up with a gearmotor rather than a servo with the drive electronics associated, requireing you to drive them with an h-bridge of some type. You might simply experiment with removing the·case of the servo you're using to see how to fit it together more closely and still retain the drive electronics, perhaps moved to the side for a better fit.·Yet another possibility involves mounting the servos on top of on another, with a belt to drive the wheels where they are placed.

    Hello
You could take a look at Microservos used for microlight radio controlled airplanes.
You find these servos at your lokal R/C dealer.

Try http://www.idnet.de/homepage/scholl/Englisch/light_ng.htm·for the smallest and lightest servos available. They do not use a geartrain like most, but a single spur and pinion gear driving a screw and provide a linear not rotary output. They are available in the USA from http://www.homefly.com/·

I have no relationship to either company but do use a set of these servos in my indoor RC plane.

I have ordered from Dave (owner of Homefly) a couple of times and the
service has always been prompt. On one of my orders there was an item that
was out of stock and he offered to either return the money leave the item on
order. I left the item on order and received it in about 4 weeks.

motors and the gears. From what I see there, it seems that the servo
casing is occupying a lot of room. If I can find a mechanism to mount
these gears onto something more custom to save that extra space, I can
    then in effect miniaturize it.

My question are as follows: Please help with any of your comments.

    1. Is there a dealer who sells miniature gears that I can use off
the shelf and hook up the mini-motor ?
    2. I'd like to use the same gears found in the servo, but, want
to get away from the casing. Can you please give me ideas on how to
    accomplish this.

I have a 1" X 1" space that I can work with, if I can get away from
using the casing that will really save me more room.

    Thanks a lot in advance.
