A beginner''s question

Hello, I have a very basic question. I have 2 brand new BS2s that I
mounted on the educational board that I bought from Parallax, and I'm
using their serial cable. I had never used one before, so I wanted to
simply run one of the example programs that I see on their website.
Unfortunately, I'm having trouble downloading the code onto the
board.
I'm getting an error that says "Basic Stamp 2 detected but not
responding on COM1. Check Power Supply." The power supply I'm using
is
a 9v battery and there's nothing wrong with it. I'm also positive
that
the stamp is oriented correctly on the board.
I have tried using both the Win9x/NT editor, and the DOS version. I
tried these both on a computer running Windows NT, and one running
Win98. I tried changing the preferences in the stemp editor I have (v
1.096) and added the comment that the readme suggests ( '{$STAMP BS2}
)...When I called tech support they suggested I change the editor
operation settings and the debug port settings. I also went in and
made sure that the serial port was enabled rather than being auto in
the computers setup. None of this worked. I tried swapping cables and
using a different BS2, but I get the same error with both.
The baud speed and parity bits etc etc are all matched. I closed all
programs but the systray and explorer (and the editor) and got the
same error. I know the COM port works just fine, as I was able to set
up a hyperterminal connection to a seetron LCD that I would
eventually like to drive with the stamp.
I know this seems like a really stupid question, but I'm all out of
ideas for what to change to make this work. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jason
