Connecting Keyboard (CueCat) to BS2

Hi, I've tried this before, to connect a Keyboard and/or a CueCat (
www.getcat.com ) to my BS2. I ordered the Pak PAK-VI Keyboard
Coprocessor from Al Williams AWC. It worked when I placed the Pak in
cooked mode but after I had the chip for only about 3 days, I
accidentally fried the dang Pak-VI. I now want to give this project
another try but there is no way in Hell that I will pay another $30
for another Pak! Sorry Al. :-\ Unless Al is feeling generous and
decides to send me a replacement, complements of AWC :-), but I doubt
it. I am here to ask ANYBODY if they know of ANY alternative chip I
could program somehow or obtain that will do the same thing (CHEAP).
I don't want to program my BS2 to interpret Keyboard scan codes. I
want pure ASCII Serial data from the keyboard to the BS2.
There is an article in Poptronics (July 2000, vol. 1 No. 7 Page. 48)
that Explains how PC keyboards work and gives an example circuit and
code on how to make a PC keyboard interface chip yourself. My
problem is that I don't know where to get a 68HC705J1A
microcontroller nor do I know what hardware I need to get the program
into the chip. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
