PCB drawing software
Hello guys,
Could you please recommend a shareware or a trial version of a good PCB layout designer software for me to test out. I don't want it to be very complicated please. Just something that will help me draw and there after layout on a PCB.
Thanks a lot in advance

bogged down in complicated stuff. It has no auto router or fancy features. I
use it to manually make circuit traces, following a hand drawn schematic. When
finished you can send the file in to be made by them(around $100/single
board) Or I shut off all grid lines and junk, and do a screen capture, and
then print the board to a photo sensitve board myself, etching my own board
that way. Lacking an auto router seems like a handycap, but for smaller
boards, and lower parts counts you can do an awful lot by trial and error.
I have a 20 part count board, 4 Ic;s in 3x4 space and only have 2 jumper
wires,all single sided etching. A little ingenuity goes a long ways,and I
find the biggest gain in a program is simplcity, leaving room for
thought, instead of using all your brain power trying to understand the
program <S>
Good luck.

thanks a lot Kerry. I just bumped into WinBoard PCB. Seems like it is a simple (at least not too complicated one). I shall try expressPCB and Winboard.
thanks again

for the prototype and the final production
order. Both were very good quality.
The program is very easy to use as well.
Plus I like that it can calculate board
cost and shipping as well.
I couldn't get a sample though :)

I'm starting to like ExpressPCB. I have a question abt printing and resizing.
How does one switch off grid before printing. I tried the options and unchecked the show grid. It does not show on the screen but, shows up in the print out.
Secondly, how does one restore the original size of the circuit board on the screen. I'm having trouble restoring the size - and when I take a screen capture, I'm getting the enlarged size - which won't work. If I can restore the original size, that will be great for screen capture. I can then take the screen capture to paintbrush and edit from there.
Please advise.
thanks

You can't remove the grid from the print-out. This is to prevent you from
making full-sized artwork (easily, anyway).

You could use a graphics program, like Paint Shop Pro, to clean and scale
your art. But then, you could just use PSP to create the art to begin with.

lines back in. What I do is get my ckt board on screen in expresspcb,
eliminate all gridlines, corners, etc and then take a screen capture using
the print screen key.
I then paste this back into a standard graphics program and print my circuit
board from there. This way I can also print it out to an exact measurment.
On your board layout going to a wierd size. There is a command to zoom the
screen in and out. When I start designing I pick a zoom ratio that fits all
the board on screen without scrolling, then I save the file. The next time I
reboot ,and load it,it comes up on screen properly.
Did you first size your boards corners properly? the left upper corner is
fixed, and you drag the others to size. I goofed on 1 board and had to
manually redo everything.
Good luck!

Thanks. But, I'm not ready to discover the real big tool quite yet - but just need a simple one.
Imagine a small baby. A baby can learn only so much - too much too soon could cause problems. I'm new to electronics. I'm already getting scared of all the things in this vast subject. I don't want to overwhelm myself at this point. I'll take it slowly, but, steadily. There is no comparison to the fun one has when s/he learns upon "need" and *not* upon pressure.

I respectfully disagree with the ideas paraphrased as "all I need is a
simple trace and pad drawing program, because I don't want to waste time
learning a full-featured circuit package."· In the late 1980s, I was pretty
fluent with AutoCAD, so I designed a circuit-drawing program, complete with
specialized parts library.· I thought it was a great use of my $3000 AutoCAD
until I found that it wouldn't produce Gerber files. Among many other design
limitations, I hadn't built in some easy method of making ground planes.· In
short, I didn't know what I was missing until I tried a few low-priced
specialized PCB packages.· Now I use Ivex products (Winboard, etc.) because
there is no way that I could reproduce all of its features in a finite time
with AutoCAD.· BUT, using the same logic, I'm still wondering what I'm
missing by not using a high-end package like Protel, Tango, etc.
Just my 0.0005 mils worth,
Dennis

I recently used PCBexpressed here at work
for the prototype and the final production
order. Both were very good quality.
The program is very easy to use as well.
Plus I like that it can calculate board
cost and shipping as well.
I couldn't get a sample though :)

Subject: RE: [basicstamps] PCB drawing software
nagi: you cannot use the file save command in expresspcb· it puts those grid
lines back in. What I do is get my ckt board on screen in expresspcb,
eliminate all gridlines, corners, etc· and then take a screen capture using
the print screen key.
Did you first size your boards corners properly?· the left upper corner is
fixed, and you drag the others to size. I goofed on 1 board and had to
manually redo everything.
Good luck!

I am interested with the PCB drawing software
you mentioned. Is it free? Can you tell me where
I can get the drawing software?
Thank you.

Does anyone have any experience with it? It claims: "Schematic Capture and
PCB Design Software for the Linux (i386+), DOS and Windows platforms."
It will produce Gerber files.
The demo tour looked good, IMHO, anyway, and it costs about $40.00US.

choosing PCB design software:
1) Versatile editing features for pads, tracks and groundplanes. As designs
become moderately complex, a lot more time is spent on editing (adjusting)
these than initially placing them.
2) Technical support. If your design locks up (freezes) in the final stages,
you'll need help to bail you out. A low-priced design package becomes
expensive in lost time without it. When this happened to me with IVEX's
WinBoard, I e-mailed the board file to them, they returned it fixed, and
included a fast lesson in proper groundplane procedures to prevent it from
happening in the future.

I used AutoCAD for a few boards but have just ordered DraftCAD.

The program has not arrived yet so I cannot say much about the editing
features nor technical support. I appreciate your comments - I may still
have to purchase a better program!
